A Bad Apple

iPod Hi-Fi

I was waiting for it. I knew it was on the horizon. In a way I'm glad it's here so we can get past it and on to better things. I'm talking about the iPod Hi-Fi; the bad product you just knew Apple had to churn out to prove just how good all the other products are.

There's a great little set on flickr showing off what's in the iPod Hi-Fi box, and you must read the comments - they are not flattering. Even more than that - I agree with most of them. Putting the iPod in the stand-up position on top of the unit is probably the single dumbest thing I've seen Apple do in a while. Maybe that wouldn't be that bad (yes, it would) if you could lay it down or fold it back or something. Plus it's $429 (!), which means it is more than the Bose SoundDock and it doesn't even have a name brand speaker manufacturer behind it that we know of.

Summer is for Keyboards

I'm not sure why, but all of a sudden there has been a jump in the number of new keyboard sightings out there on the web. On one end of the scale you have the Das Keyboard, a stealth-black totally blank keyboard designed for ubergeeks. On the other end of the scale you have the Optimus, a completely customizable keyboard that has a tiny lcd screen under each key. Now tell me what's for ubergeeks! As long as the feel of the keyboard is alright, I know the Optimus will be a huge seller. It's just one of those crazy "why did no one ever think of that" kind of ideas. You mean I maybe get to spend hours designing characters for my keyboard layout? Where do I sign up!

PSP

official_psp_design.jpg So it has been a week+ now with the PSP and I have to say it's everything I'd hoped for. To start I should say I did get a perfect-condition unit: there were no dead pixels; no loose parts; the battery lasts a long time.

To put it mildly, the games are amazing! I don't even think the Gretzky game that I was forced to buy is that bad, although probably only because I don't know any better not being a hockey game fan. Not since the TurboGraphix 16 have the graphics on a handheld been so close to its console equivelant. I've also tried out the ad hoc wireless and although it could be a bit easier to start and find games, once connected it was seemless and fun.
