Something probably not a lot of people know is that whenever I use my Visa, I go home and almost immediately pay it off. I need a Visa for travelling, and I get points on it so it's more convenient than debit. It's also ultimately more secure.
Something else to know: I almost never use my visa for a Taxi! I almost always pay in cash, even those $40+ rides to the airport and back. Which reminds me - Hey I'm in Holland still! Hello again from the land of windmills, tulips, and mosquitos in October!
Now to the point: Thanks to the wonders of internet banking, I can check my visa bill remotely - hey there it is in another browser tab ("Hello Visa balance!"). So imagine my surprise when I see some Toronto cab rides appearing - like yesterday! Now to be true the first "odd" entry I noticed was this:
13 Oct 2005 NG TAXI MARKHAM ON 50.00
Now I was in Toronto on the 13th (a Thursday) , but I'm really pretty sure I didn't take a cab to Markham that day. Oh that reminds me of something else! I always use BECK Taxi. There is a Taxi stand at the corner of Yonge and Eglinton and there's always a few there. Okay but honestly I let that one go because life has been busy lately and who knows.
Ah but then I get these:
19 Oct 2005 KEN MARKS - TAXI TORONTO ON 25.00
19 Oct 2005 AIRVISE SERVICES LIMOUSINTORONTO ON 35.00
Now see, I know I wasn't anywhere near Toronto on the 19th, and I also know that the only cab ride I took recently was to the airport using who? That's right - BECK Taxi, and I paid using what!? Oh yes, Cash. At this point I sent an alert using the messaging system in my bank's website to start tracking these suspicious transactions. I got a message back today saying they're looking into it (I chose the wrong dept. to send it to apparently so it took a little longer to find the right person). Oh and looky here:
23 Oct 2005 ANYO LEASE/GAS/TAXI TORONTO ON 44.00
Wow, whoever this is they are taking some serious taxi rides! So no update on how this gets resolved, I'm confident it will though since I so obviously am not the one using my card that's in my wallet, with me in Amsterdam. I wonder if whomever this is knows those little cameras in the Taxis record images?
Is there a lesson here? Yes! Always double-check your bills, I probably would have let that first $50 slide as having come from somehwere.
UPDATE: Looks like whomever it is doesn't read my blog :) or does but doesn't care. Yet another Taxi ride has occured. Also, people who live in or near Toronto will notice that none of the taxi companies being used here are reputable major taxi companies: Beck, Royal, Diamond, CO-OP..
26 Oct 2005 BEST TAXI TORONTO ON 20.00
UPDATE April '07: It seems a lot of people are getting scammed. The common consensus seems to be that some delivery person is using the visa slips for no good. I know I didn't, and I have not heard form others that they've gotten in to unreputable or unmarked cabs. NG Taxi probably doesn't even operate a single cab, I suspect they're a company in name only, but thank you Chris for the solid advice.
Thank you for the information
I too read my visa statement online and never use a taxi !
I had charges from this said ANYO/LEASE GAS TAXI on Oct 14 41.00
OCT 28th BLOOMINGDALE LIMOUSINE $27.00
OCT 28th ANYO again $93.00
I cancelled my visa
I have my suspicions its related to Pizza orders ! and also in the Yand E area of TO
I would like to find out who is doing this

I have recently got the same thing, NG taxi for 73.00, but the guy in the taxi, company i can't remember, said he didn't have change and asked if i could use a credit card. I kick myself now for being so naive, because after he did that paper slip he said it didn't work, ripped it up and said he might have change which he of course did. I will never take a taxi again.

Just be sure to report it.
Don't stop taking Taxis, just stick to the major licensed carriers: Beck, Diamond, Royal, and that blue one ;)

I also had the same cab company charging me on my visa for 52 dollars. I couldn't remember taking a cab for that much.
I called visa and they told me that some of these cab companies, charge you months after you pay them. I got them to investigate the case and send me a copy of the reciept so I can check the signature.
Its a good thing to keep track of the amount that you spend and just check them, cause in this cases, dates wont match.

I also noticed an unusual charge from NG Taxi in the amount of $55.00 on October 13 as well. I immediately called VISA and disputed the charges although they also mentioned that sometimes taxi companies take months to apply a charge to a credit card. In any event, I received a "copy" of the receipt which had a signature on it but it certainly wasn't mine.
As soon as I saw this I hoped online and googled NG Taxi which took me to this blog - not surprisingly I'm not the first victim.
I live at Yonge/St.Clair and order a fair bit of pizza (Pizzaville, Pizza Nova) - could be the connection.
I'm definitely cancelling me card though and would suggest everyone with this charge do the same.

Paulo,
I also live at Yonge and St. Clair and have these charges, but I do not order pizza ever. It seems very strange we are both in this situation and live in the same neighbourhood- someone going thru our garbage?

I also received a charge from Airvise Limousine for $30. I, too was out of the country on the day that the transaction was charged. I live in Aurora, and never order pizza on my card. Has anyone received a resolution from VISA? I was told I would have to pay for it and they would investigate.

I had no problems getting VISA to reverse the charges. Mostly because when they looked at them, there was no signature (naturally), in which case they more easily err on the side of the card holder. The whole thing took like 5 days once I alerted them to the problem. Not bad really.

I also had three from ANYO - one in early Dec for 40.00 and two on the same day in Feb. for 35.00. When I looked them up it brought me here. I live in the Yonge and Lawrence area. VISA seemed to know that these were fraudulent charges and my card is now cancelled (because apparently this will continue to occur). Why can they not find and shut this company down?

I am also had the same NG taxi charge on my visa - and several other taxi charges.

Does anyone know exactly WHO NG taxi is? I just got a charge on my card, and ironically, I'm in Amsterdam myself. Will be disputing this charge when I get home, but should the credit card company be looking into this NG taxi? Doesn't sound like it's a registered company at all...

I also have (seeemingly) a wrong charge from NG Taxi, also for 73$.
I have noticed on my credit card bill that I often get charges from NG when I use Beck Taxis. I called Beck and they said it's not abnormal for their drivers to (at the end of the day or whatever) input their credit card charges into a machine at a servicing garage. The person didn't know NG Taxi off the top of her head (apparently...) but said that you can find charges from service stations or garages from Beck taxis. My credit card company is currently looking into it.

Took a taxi on fri night just recently and had a similar problem. NG TAXI MARKHAM line-item showed up on my visa statement for $140!!! I wasn't anywhere near markham, but downtown TO. The cabby on friday night ran my visa once and said it didn't work, then ripped it up, and gave me the ripped up slips, then he swiped it again and i signed this one for $21... now why would it show up on my VISA for $140... hmmm. Well i've got visa looking into it right now and luckily i keep all my receipts so i'm sending them my copy of the receipt and all the info.

I am also in the Yonge/Lawrence area and I just got a charge from NG TAXI MARKHAM... it's only $14, so the $ isn't the biggest issues right now... just that they might do it again. Also, I *never* use credit cards in taxis because they have to call them in, etc, and it's a pain. Anyway, I thought it was very coincidental that so many from my area had posted here, so I thought I'd share. Visa is double checking it to make sure. I'll let you know how it turns out!
Also, I forgot to mention that I frequently use my card to order food... sometimes pizza and often Italian from a place called Il Fornaro on Avenue Rd... anyone else order from there?

Hello all, I'm not a regular to this site but it's funny how i came across it. I work for a municipality north of Toronto and there I deal with the licensing of taxi's in the area and I hear all these stories all to often.
I guess my advice to keep yourself safe is to take the better known companies ie: Royal Taxi. Also, ensure that the cab you are getting into has a metal plate affixed to the rear of the car which is furnished by the municipality. That plate will have a sticker on it as well and if you get close enough to it you'll see if it has been approved for that year. The cab should also have numbers on it's side corrosponding to that plate number on the back.
Also, once inside the cab, the meter should have a plastic and metal seal on it (in Toronto it should be a blue and clear plastic) indicating that the meter has been approved and they shouldn't be ripping you off.
I guess my best advice would be to get ahold of someone from the municipality and find out which companies are licenced and don't take the NG taxi special. Remember a taxi isn't a limo and if it isn't a vehicle that is clearly marked as one, I wouldn't get into it. I hope this helps!

I just got burned by this scam this week! I got into a legitimate cab company's car (Beck) and had a short (under $10) cab ride. The driver told me he didn't have change and asked if I would mind using a credit card. Normally I would make the driver stop to get change somewhere but I was in a rush so I stupidly agreed. A couple of days later I see a $60 charge on my VISA account! The company name read NG TAXI. I've called VISA and they're looking into it. Then I googled NG TAXI and found this blog which confirms my worst suspicions. This sucks! However, at least I know exactly who scammed me - this particular cab driver. I don't remember his name but I know what he looks like and the date/time/location I took his (Beck) cab. Maybe I can help VISA catch these cheeky little bastards.

This is another NG Taxi Markham ON incident. I took a short taxi ride sat May 6 (not sure which cab company) - cost was $8. Then I get 2 charges to my visa account for $55 and $56, same day from NG Taxi Markham ON. The fact that Markham is in the company name has nothing o do with where you went in your taxi ride. The strange thing to me is that in all of the cases I've read, the driver has the same story about having no change, just starting their shift...can you pay with visa. Then he ripped up the first visa slip like it didn't work and handed me the ripped pieces. This is maybe to insure that the proper reciept is thrown out, as it likely would be with the ripped voided reciept. Anyway, Visa was very frustrating on the phone, and I am pissed off. Apparently there were 2 more charges pending authorization on my account for same amounts, $55 and $56. That's $212 by NG Taxi in one day. This happened on Queen street downtown toronto so it's not just north of Bloor. Good luck to the rest of you and I hope this asshole is nailed.

Hey there,
I just read my visa statment online and noticed there was a charge for $17.00 from Kens Taxi Toronto. I live in toronto but know I did not take a cab that day. I called visa and they did nothing about it they said they would look into it and give me a call, I think I will just cancell my card. I just did a google search and found this site I am so glad I did because it just proves to me that it is some kind of scam. Mine was only $17.00 but it could have been way more and that is scary! How does one get enough information to do this? I to hope this asshole get's nailed.
