Victory in the Pacific

In my quest to find games online that I can play with some frequency, I stumbled across an old Avalon Hill Classic called Victory in the Pacific.

The big hurdle, besides not owning a copy of the game (yet), was that the map is so awful by today’s standards.  I think if I’d played this game back in the early 1980s when it was still new I wouldn’t feel that way, but that’s not the case.  In addition, I needed another small project to fill some time.

Since I was going to have to remake the map from scratch, I decided to look at a few historical maps from the period.

These maps don’t quite have the right level of detail for gaming however, and they’re a bit too drab.  Working from the general design of these historical maps and the original Victory in the Pacific map I came up with the following:

There are some redundancies on the original; like each sea zone mentions you can retreat to any RED port. I’ve removed these redundancies, largely because the ports are Black now, but secondarily because I felt the board should be a bit cleaner.

Next up is recreating  the pieces.  Here there isn’t much to be done other than size them up a bit for this “deluxe” version of the game, and mount them on 3mm plywood laser cut by Litko Aerosystems.  Pictures of that once it happens as I also have some ideas for simplifying the game counters.
